Conor Coady impressed at Huddersfield Town, but few could've imagined his career would play out in the way it has.

The 2014/15 season was a largely forgettable one for Huddersfield Town, as they finished 16th in the Championship and made no real impact in either cup competition.

However, despite that, a member of the squad from that campaign would go on to represent England, as well as playing in Europe.

Of course, the player in question is Conor Coady, who was a notable arrival for the Terriers, joining for around £375,000 from Liverpool.

Conor Coady’s time at Huddersfield Town

Coady had impressed as a midfielder on loan at Sheffield United in the previous campaign, so he was brought to Huddersfield to add something to the middle of the park.

And, in fairness, that’s what he did. Whilst it was an average season on the whole, Coady was one of the standout performers for Chris Powell, who landed the job after Mark Robins was sacked following an opening day defeat to Bournemouth.

Coady was a regular that year, missing just one league game, and he chipped in with three goals, which included a brilliant strike in a 3-1 win at Wolves.

That may have been enough to convince the hierarchy at Molineux that Coady was a player with huge potential, as they completed a deal for the midfielder in the summer, meaning his time at the John Smith’s Stadium was limited to just one season.

For Huddersfield, a £2m fee represented a decent profit on the player, and whilst it was disappointing to lose a young talent, few would have envisaged how Coady’s career would play out.

Conor Coady flourishes at Wolves

Coady’s story at Wolves is well-known, but it really is remarkable.

Having been signed as an aggressive midfielder, Coady struggled to nail down a regular place in his preferred position during his first campaign, with many of his appearances coming as a right-back.

It wasn’t until Paul Lambert was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo that Coady became a key figure for Wolves.

The ex-Porto chief identified Coady’s leadership and organisational skills, as well as his ability on the ball, as a crucial part of the way he wanted to play. Essentially, Coady became a sweeper at Molineux, marshalling the back three and leading the team as they went on an incredible run.

Over the next few years, Wolves would win the Championship, record back-to-back 7th-placed finishes in the Premier League, play in an FA Cup semi-final and reach the last eight of the Europa League - and he was at the heart of it all.

Along the way, they were backed by some huge signings, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Diogo Jota among the high-profile recruits.

So, it wasn’t exactly fairytale stuff, as serious money was pumped in, but it was for Coady, who remained an integral part of the team up until Santo’s departure.

Such form saw the defender rewarded with international recognition, with Coady now having won ten caps and scoring once for his country. As well as that, he was part of the England squads that went to Euro 2020 and the World Cup.

Now 31, and with Leicester City, Coady is still plying his trade at the highest level, and he will still feel he has a lot to offer over the coming years.

But, you get the feeling his career peaked during his time with Wolves and then England, and it will ensure he has some fantastic memories to look back on when he does hang up his boots.

For Huddersfield, it’s nice that they played a small part in Coady’s journey, and it highlights just how unpredictable the game can be, as surely nobody would have seen it coming when he was with the Terriers.
