As Huddersfield Town embark upon a new season, the Terriers should target a move for Leeds United's Sam Greenwood.
Huddersfield Town, as they prepare for another season in League One, have taken the surprise decision to appoint Ipswich Town’s first-team coach, Lee Grant, as their new manager ahead of the 2025/26 summer transfer window.
The Terriers went down to the third-tier last season and then endured a miserable end to this campaign, collecting just nine points from their 15 games of the season.
Michael Duff was sacked in mid-March and club legend Jon Worthington then struggled to get a tune out of the players during his interim spell in charge, with Town losing their last six games of the season.
Now, as they seek another new approach after the more pragmatic one of Duff, they turn to Grant, who, if Ipswich are anything to go by, will aim to try and play a more progressive, passing style of football.
That should mean creative players become more important at the John Smith’s Stadium, and one player that Town should therefore be looking at is Leeds United’s Sam Greenwood.
Sunderland-born Greenwood moved from his hometown club to Arsenal at the age of 16, before then moving from north London to Elland Road a couple of years later.
Greenwood eventually made his first-team debut for Leeds in January 2021 and has gone on to make 35 appearances for the Whites, including 25 of those coming in the Premier League.
He had never really fulfilled much of the promise he has shown, though, and so was loaned out to Middlesbrough for the 2023/24 season and then on to Preston North End for the 2024/25 campaign.
In both spells, Greenwood showed flashes of the technical talent that he clearly possesses but a lack of effectiveness and efficiency, as well as consistency, has held him back thus far.
Now, the 23-year-old will be looking to properly assert himself and, not necessarily ‘relaunch’ his career, but rather give it a bit of a boost over the course of the next 12 months.
The place that could well be ideally suited to doing that is at Leeds’ West Yorkshire local rivals Huddersfield.
Huddersfield spent some money during the January transfer window on strikers Joe Taylor and Dion Charles but the pair, who reportedly signed for £3 million and £750,000 respectively, scored just two goals between them – both of them notched by Taylor.
Their own poor performances didn’t help the situation and have supporters have grown frustrated, particularly with Charles, but there are a variety of reasons as to why they have not yet shown any real signs of quality at the John Smith’s.
A sheer lack of attacking spark and creativity in the final third to supply enough chances for the pair has been a major issue, whether that be a stifled style of football or a lack of personnel to provide incision in the attacking areas of the pitch.
Greenwood would be able to potentially have a League One title challenging team built around him as a number ten or attacking midfielder and, with the potential of that firepower up-front, could have a bit of a prolific time of it in terms of goals and assists.
