It is understood that the Elland Road academy product could depart either permanently or on loan but a move to the second tier is expected.

But who should be in pursuit of him and why?

Our FLW writers issue their verdicts…

Shackleton’s versatility would make him an asset for the vast majority of second tier clubs.

From the player’s perspective, it is crucial that he moves to a club where he will start regularly, or there is an argument that the 22-year-old would be better off staying at Leeds on the fringes for another season.

Coventry City stand out as a club with a good reputation for developing young players, who could benefit from having a dynamic attack-minded player like Shackleton in their fluid three-at-the-back system.

Mark Robins has had a positive impact on a number of loanees from the Premier League in his time at the CBS Arena, and Shackleton’s energy in central midfield or wide areas could help the Sky Blues back up their impressive 2021/22 campaign.

It’s an obvious link but Huddersfield Town should be all over this if they can fund it.

Leeds won’t demand too much for Shackleton to push him out of their price bracket and you’d think a couple of million might do the trick.

Corberan would surely love to link up with the midfielder, having worked with him during his own time at Elland Road. The pair were involved with each other at u23 level and then merged with the first team at the same time.

That’s a link that’s really hard to ignore.

You’d also point out the fact that Huddersfield might lose Lewis O’Brien this summer. He will be sorely missed with his enthusiasm to run, tenacious attitude without the ball and overall commitment traits that are hard to replace.

Shackleton, though, ticks a lot of the same boxes. He might be right-footed, but you could see how he might well replace O’Brien in Corberan’s squad.

For what it’s worth, there are a fair few sides that could benefit from Shackleton. You just feel like a short move across West Yorkshire to link up with Corberan feels the right option.

One club that you feel should be keeping a close eye on the situation here, are Blackburn Rovers.

Shackleton is a player who is capable of playing both central midfielder and right-back, both of which are positions Rovers need reinforcements in, following the departures of the likes of Ryan Nyambe, Bradley Johnson and Joe Rothwell.

At 22 years old, the Leeds midfielder is also at the early stages of his career, meaning he is the sort of player that new Rovers head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson likes to work with, something which could also bring the best out of him if he moves to Ewood Park.

With Blackburn and Leeds having worked together on Ian Poveda’s loan last season as well, there is a link already established between the two clubs, that makes this a deal that looks as though it could work well for all concerned.
