The defender had previously been linked with a move to Huddersfield Town, which has now failed to materialise.

Other EFL clubs such as Oxford United and Charlton Athletic had also been reported as having an interest in the youngster.

But he is now set to make the switch to German football instead, with Chelsea having agreed terms over a loan with Paderborn.

Humphreys has been training with the first team squad in recent weeks but has yet to receive any playing time in the Premier League.

Graham Potter did hand the centre back his debut in the FA Cup in Chelsea’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City earlier this month, featuring alongside Kalidou Koulibaly.

Despite supposed interest from the EFL, the Blues opted for a deal with the German side due to first team opportunities available to him in their squad.

The Verdict

Paderborn are likely able to afford greater playing time for Humphreys than Huddersfield can which has led to this decision.

The Terriers will be looking for reinforcements between now and the 31 January deadline, but this isn’t a deal they will feel they’ve greatly missed out on either.

The defender has a lot of promise but Mark Fotheringham has options in defence to handle.

But the Championship side will need to improve in order to aid their status in the second division as they look to battle against relegation this season.
