Huddersfield Town put Leeds United saga to bed with key Lewis O’Brien agreement

Huddersfield Town have been boosted by Lewis O’Brien committing his future to the club and signing a new long-term contract until the summer of 2025.

Leeds United were hot on the heels of the midfielder during the summer transfer window, targeting the 22-year-old after missing out on Conor Gallagher, who moved to Crystal Palace.

Phil Hodgkinson revealed Town rejected a £13m package for O’Brien and, by the end of the window, he remained part of Carlos Corberan’s squad.

Now, O’Brien has put speculation to bed by signing a new three-year agreement with the Terriers. His existing deal was due to expire in the summer and, although the club had the option to extend that by a further 12 months, they’ve targeted the longer-term.

Football League World previously reported how O’Brien was ready to put the Leeds saga behind him and focus on Huddersfield, who have rewarded him with a significant pay hike, sources have explained.

O’Brien has made 86 appearances for Huddersfield since progressing through the club’s academy and is hurtling towards the century mark heading into 2022.

Earlier in his career the midfielder played for Bradford City on loan, impressing with four goals in 46 appearances in a different part of West Yorkshire.

It has been at Huddersfield, though, where O’Brien has really excelled and established himself as one of the most exciting, vibrant players in the Championship.

Corberan has been key to elevating O’Brien’s game, too. The Spaniard’s high-tempo football saw O’Brien thrive last season, with three goals and three assists in 42 appearances.

This year already he’s scored once and assisted another in only six appearances, contributing to Huddersfield’s early season form that sees them narrowly outside the play-off places after eight games.
