Huddersfield Town took a punt on Bermudian striker Nahki Wells from League One club Bradford City in January 2014, but fans at the John Smith's Stadium were perhaps unprepared for what he would bring to the club.

Wells arrived at Huddersfield Town halfway through the 2013-14 season on an initial emergency loan deal before signing permanently for four-and-a-half years for what was believed to be a club record transfer, according to Bradford City's website.

Huddersfield manager at the time, Mark Robins, praised the striker's goal record for Bradford in a press release. He said: "His [Nahki Wells'] goal scoring record over the last 18 months is hugely impressive and we believe that he is ready to make the step up to the Championship."

The striker had scored an impressive 14 goals and made two assists in just 19 League appearances for the Bantams in the first half of the 2013-14 season before signing for the Terriers.

Wells finished his time at Valley Parade with 53 goals and 11 assists. He scored four goals in a successful League Two Play-off campaign in the 2013/14 season, and three goals in the Bantams' famous run to the 2012/13 EFL Cup final.

Nahki Wells was a top signing for Huddersfield Town

Wells' success continued when he made the short move to West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield.

He made an instant impact with a 90th-minute winner in a 1-0 victory over Millwall on his home debut less than 24 hours after signing for the club.

Six more goals and two assists followed in his maiden half-season in the Championship.

The striker thrived in his first two full seasons for the Terriers and finished as their top goalscorer in both seasons, with 14 goals in his first and 18 in his second, as he managed to help his team avoid relegation on both occasions.

Wells' biggest success was achieved in his final season at John Smith's Stadium when he scored ten goals and made three assists as David Wagner's side made the Championship play-offs for the first ever time.

He played every minute of the 2016/17 Championship playoffs as his team navigated penalty shootouts against Sheffield Wednesday and Reading to achieve promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.

The striker made a £5 million move to Premier League side Burnley, according to the BBC, ahead of the 2017/18 season. The move landed Huddersfield an estimated £3.7 million profit.

That profit was far more than expected for Huddersfield. The forward's contract was set to expire at the end of the following season when he would be eligible to move on a free transfer.

According to Sky Sports, the Terriers put this profit towards signing a new striker for a reported club-record fee of £11 million.

Steve Mounié was bought in from French club Montpellier on a four-year deal after scoring 14 goals in Ligue 1 the following season.

Despite scoring a Premier League debut brace in a 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace, in a season where Huddersfield beat the drop, the Benin international failed to captivate the John Smith's Stadium crowd quite like Wells did.

Wells' Burnley move was a bust

Wells failed to establish himself in Sean Dyche's Burnley team and made only ten appearances for them before making two consecutive loan moves to Queens Park Rangers, where he achieved some success. He played 72 games over both seasons for the West Londoners and scored 24 goals with ten assists.

The 24-time-capped Bermuda international made a permanent move to Bristol City in January 2020, aged 29 years old. The striker has played almost 200 times for the Robins.

Wells has become something of a Football League legend owing to his distinguished playing career, with over 400 appearances in the EFL. His exceptional goal-scoring for QPR, Bradford, Huddersfield and his current club Bristol City has yielded over a century of EFL goals.

At 33 years old, the striker is showing few signs of slowing down in the south-west.

Still, it is in the north of England where Wells will be remembered most fondly after helping Bradford achieve promotion to League One and Huddersfield achieve promotion to the Premier League.
