Huddersfield Town have made a fresh move for Olympiacos goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik following the revelation that Lee Nicholls will spend the remainder of the 2022-23 season on the sidelines.

That is according to YorkshireLive, who have confirmed reports in Greece that the Terriers are back in for the 53-cap Czech Republic international following interest earlier in the transfer window.

Town, who currently occupy one of the three places in the Championship relegation zone, have been without first-choice stopper Nicholls since he picked up a shoulder injury a number of weeks ago, and that setback has proved to be season-ending.

Having already strengthened in a number of positions this month with experienced players such as Martyn Waghorn, Anthony Knockaert and Matt Lowton, Huddersfield will now look to 33-year-old Vaclik as a short-term solution.

What year was Huddersfield Town founded?

1878 1888 1898 1908

Vaclik has previously played for Sevilla in the Champions League and Europa League in recent years before heading to Olympiacos in 2021, where he is currently out of favour, having played just 13 times in all competitions in 2022-23 and is the current back-up to Alexandros Paschalakis.

The Czech goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the current season and now Huddersfield are hopeful of tying up a deal before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday evening.

The Verdict

Huddersfield can’t go into the rest of the season with Nicholas Bilokapic and Ryan Schofield as their goalkeeping options as it would be far too risky in a relegation battle.

Vaclik would possess the necessary experience and then some to keep goal for the Terriers until at least the end of the season, with good performances for Huddersfield potentially opening the door to bigger and better things in England.

He was Olympiacos’s regular starter until earlier in the season when picking up an injury, so perhaps it’s quite a surprise that he could be willing to trade being in their squad for being involved in a Championship relegation battle.

But it would show Huddersfield’s intent if they were to pull this off – if they didn’t land a goalkeeper at all before 11pm then they are going to really struggle due to the lack of an experienced head in-between the sticks.
