Huddersfield Town appointed former manager David Wagner on November 5, 2015, which seemed like a big risk at the time, given that he had been brought to the club from the Borussia Dortmund second team - who were in the fourth tier of German football at the time and had no previous Football League experience.

At this point, Dortmund II were the only team the German had managed, and having joined them in 2011, he oversaw the side's relegation from the third tier to the fourth tier following a tricky 2014-15 campaign just months before joining the Terriers.

After joining the West Yorkshire outfit in November 2015, Wagner guided his new club to a 19th place finish at the end of the 2015/16 campaign - 11 points clear of the bottom three.

But greater success was just around the corner for the Terriers, as in the 2016/17 season, Wagner enjoyed his most memorable season as a manager to date as he guided Town to an unlikely play-off spot.

Under Wagner's expert stewardship, the Terriers would go all the way to the Premier League after seeing off Sheffield Wednesday via a penalty shoot-out in the play-off semi-finals.

The Yorkshire club would go on to repeat the feat at Wembley, as following a 0-0 draw with Reading - then managed by Jaap Stam - the Terriers won a penalty shootout 4-3, sending them to the top flight of English football for the first time since 1972.

Remarkably, the Terriers earned promotion despite finishing the season with a goal difference of -2 after losing their last two games of the regular season to Birmingham and Cardiff, 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

Wagner's men entered the Premier League as massive underdogs, and it would seemingly take a miracle to maintain their top-flight status.

But the German would go on to achieve survival with the side he guided to promotion, as they finished 16th in the 2017/18 Premier League table, four points above the relegation zone.

However, a miserable 2018/19 campaign would follow, as the Terriers finished rock-bottom in the top-flight after picking up a tally of just 16 points with only three wins to their name.

By January 2019, Wagner left Huddersfield via mutual consent, with the club sitting bottom of the Championship, a decision which ultimately worked in the club's favour, as they avoided relegation at the end of the 2019/20 second tier season.

The Terriers will always be grateful for Wagner's time at the club, due to the fact he guided them to the Premier League, while the Football League as a whole will always respect his impressive exploits in West Yorkshire.

Norwich City appointed Wagner as their head coach in January 2023 following the dismissal of former boss Dean Smith - a decision which was surely influenced by the German's previous Championship success with the Terriers, especially as it was Stuart Webber who made the decision to bring him to Norfolk, just like he did when he was director of football at Huddersfield in 2015.

The Canaries finished 13th in the Championship last season, seven points adrift of the top six spots, but this campaign - which is Wagner's first full season at Carrow Road - the promotion battle is well and truly on for the Norfolk outfit.

Hull City, but the Tigers do boast a game in hand over the Canaries.

Should the Carrow Road outfit land a top-six spot, Wagner will hope to use his play-off experience with the Terriers to guide his current club to the Premier League.

The Terriers took a big gamble back in 2015 by bringing the manager to the Championship, and it is one which the Canaries are now reaping the benefits of as he continues to perform well in the second tier.
