Huddersfield Town spent some relatively big fees during their time in the Premier League.

Over the course of two years from 2017-2019, they bought in a host of new players to try and build a squad capable of competing in the top-flight.

The Terriers had never before or since spent money so freely in their recent history, but they struggled to find players who were able to raise the level of the squad and after two seasons of battling towards the bottom of the Premier League, they were relegated in 2019.

Adama Diakhaby and Alex Pritchard were two of the players bought in to try and add some much-needed quality to Huddersfield's squad. But despite costing a combined £20m, they were unable to arrest Huddersfield's slump and the pair failed to make a lasting impact at the club.

Right-winger Diakhaby was signed from Monaco in 2018 for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m (Yorkshire Live) but was used fleetingly despite Huddersfield struggling for goals in the Premier League.

He stayed at Huddersfield until 2021, but even in the Championship he was unable to showcase his abilities and he returned to France with Ligue 2 Amiens, via a loan with Nottingham Forest.

Pritchard, meanwhile, joined Huddersfield from Norwich City in January 2018 for a reported fee of £11m (TEAMtalk), and whilst he was able to help secure Huddersfield's survival during their first season in the Premier League, his impact was minimal.

After leaving Huddersfield in 2021, Pritchard found his feet at Sunderland. But like Diakhaby, his time at Huddersfield will be quickly forgotten, remembered only as an expensive mistake.

Few stats tell the tale of Diakhaby's time at Huddersfield better than the fact he failed to score once during three seasons at the club.

Diakhaby arrived alongside fellow Monaco teammate Terence Kongolo with high expectations.

Huddersfield's two statement signings, neither player lived up to their price-tag, with Diakhaby making just 12 appearances, six of which were starts.

Diakhaby rarely made the matchday squad during his debut season and whilst he enjoyed more game time the next year with Huddersfield back in the Championship, the majority of his appearances came from the bench.

The Frenchman returned to his homeland in 2021, with just four assists to show for his time at Huddersfield.

Pritchard struggles to adapt to the Premier League

Pritchard arrived at Huddersfield with a reputation as a creative midfielder with an eye for goal.

Impressive spells at Brentford and Norwich City had earmarked him as one of the brightest talents in the Championship.

A recurring ankle injury had plagued Pritchard throughout his career, though, and he joined Huddersfield off the back of major ankle surgery which had kept him out for more than three months.

Pritchard never looked truly match fit, arriving at Huddersfield mid-season, with the club battling against relegation.

He showed glimpses of the player he could be during his time at Huddersfield, but ultimately, his inconsistency meant he was rarely relied upon.

Pritchard has since gone on to find form at Sunderland, dropping-down to League One and playing a crucial role in the Black Cats' promotion in 2022.

Ultimately, neither Diakhaby nor Pritchard will be fondly remembered in Huddersfield after forgettable and expensive spells with the club. Though after spending many of the resulting years battling to just retain their Championship status, the Terriers will surely be pining for the years they spent in the top-flight, as they contend with relegation to League One.
