Former Arsenal youth player Robbie Burton is being eyed up by Championship strugglers Huddersfield Town and League One pair Barnsley and Portsmouth, according to a report from Football Insider.

The midfielder was on the books of the Gunners for 14 years from the age of six, but ultimately he never made a senior competitive appearance for the current Premier League table-toppers and was restricted to minutes for the under-21’s.

Burton made a move abroad to Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb in February 2020 and made 17 appearances in his first full season for the club, but was sent out on loan to Istra 1961 of the same division the following season, playing just once before suffering an injury.

Now 23 years of age, Burton spent the latter part of 2022 on loan in the Republic of Ireland with Sligo Rovers, notching a singular assist in his 14 matches played for the Bit O’Red.

Real Fake

Dinamo Zagreb have this past week come to a mutual termination of Burton’s contract though after an unsuccessful time in Croatia, leaving him free to join another club, with a trio of outfits in England interested in giving him a second chance in his home nation.

The Verdict

Despite having some experience of top flight Croatian football, Burton has a lot to prove in the English game.

He was a regular in the Premier League 2 competition with Arsenal before he made the permanent switch across Europe, and he performed well at development level in England, which suggests that he will be fine at a certain level in the EFL.

However, perhaps the Championship would be a step too far for someone who was only playing in the top division of Irish football a few months ago.

The links to Portsmouth and Barnsley look a tad more realistic and feasible than Huddersfield, but Burton will perhaps have quite a few options – especially in Ireland where he has just been playing.
