Huddersfield set for player boost ahead of West Brom clash | OneFootball

After being missing since the end of September, one Huddersfield Town player is set to come back into contention for their weekend clash with third-placed West Bromwich Albion.

Late on in the summer transfer window, Carlos Corberan added to his attacking options by acquiring West Ham United youngster Mipo Odubeko on a season-long loan.

The Republic of Ireland youth international had a breakout season in the under-23 version of the Premier League last season, scoring 10 times in nine appearances for the Hammers with two goals apiece in the FA Youth Cup and the EFL Trophy as well.

Odubeko made two FA Cup appearances in the senior team for David Moyes but after his goalscoring exploits at development squad level, the decision was made to send him on loan to the Terriers.

It’s not quite gone to plan for the 19-year-old so far though, who has managed just four substitute appearances and has not been seen since a late September cameo against Swansea City.

Having not quite adapted to senior football as quick as hoped, Odubeko was left out of Corberan’s plans since the loss in Wales and the Spaniard explained last month that the striker had more work to do to feature on a regular basis at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It appears though that the teenager has put the work in as Corberan has confirmed his availability for the match against the Baggies and explained what has changed since his last statement on the Irishman.

“I was watching a very good week of work with him. He was using this international break in the way that a young player needs to use it: to continue making his progress and continue growing as a player, and to show some of that growth in game situation.

“That’s what I’m happy that he’s involved and the normal thing is that he will be involved tomorrow if everything goes well today.”

The Verdict

It won’t only be Odubeko who will be happy to hear this but also West Ham, who must be frustrated by their teenage talent’s progress up north so far this season.

Not everyone adapts quickly to the rigours of men’s football and Odubeko has clearly had a lot of learning to do to figure under Corberan.

But it isn’t like the Terriers are well-stocked with goals right now with Danny Ward chipping in with a few but Fraizer Campbell hasn’t found the back of the net in the Championship so far this season and Jordan Rhodes is on the sidelines still.

That is why Odubeko’s imminent return is timely and if he can start to show some of the scoring form that he did for West Ham’s under-23’s last season then we could see a smart prospect on our hands.
