Eddie Howe has admitted it has been a ‘stressful summer’ for Newcastle United in the transfer window.
The Magpies have endured a difficult off-season, missing out on several targets and dealing with unhappiness at St James’ Park.
Last season’s leading scorer, Alexander Isak, is currently training away from the first-team group after informing the club that he wants to leave. Liverpool have had an opening bid rejected for the Swedish striker.
Off the pitch, Newcastle saw sporting director Paul Mitchell leave in June and the club have endured multiple frustrations in the transfer market. Newcastle have brought in Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw as senior signings, while a deal is close for Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
Howe said those signings should breed ‘confidence’ in the group after Newcastle ‘missed’ out on targets to Premier League rivals earlier in the window.
“It’s been a stressful summer. [It was] not ideal going in to it in the way that we did with no CEO and no sporting director and it has become an unusual dynamic for us. We’ve just tried to make the best of the situation,” Howe said speaking to the BBC’s Newcastle United reporter Ciaran Kelly.
“We’ve been linked with a lot of players as we always are, we’ve landed some and missed some others. We are very pleased with the players that we have signed and I think the squad is in a better place now for the couple of new additions we have made.
“I think it just breeds confidence within the squad that we are going to be strong enough and resilient enough for a long campaign.”
