Howe explains lacklustre Newcastle defeat to Dortmund and Wilson substitution | OneFootball

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe believes his side expended too much energy in the win over Arsenal to play at their best against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The Magpies picked up a huge 1-0 win over the Gunners at St James’ Park over the weekend, taking them up to sixth in the Premier League table.

They could not repeat the performance at the Westfalenstadion, where they lost 2-0 to put their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the Uefa Champions League in sever doubt.

Niclas Fullkrug gave the hosts the lead in the 26th minute, before Julian Brandt scored on the counter late on as Newcastle chased an equaliser.

“From our side we weren’t that far away tonight, and I think that’s the thing to take away, because I think us at our very best, even with the number of players out, is good enough. So we have to take collective responsibility for that,” Howe said in his post-match press conference.

“The players gave so much on Sunday. It’s not a case of me questioning what they’ve given and what they could give, but I just think the game came too quickly for us. The turnaround, after what they’ve given in recent weeks, was just too early.”

Callum Wilson was forced off at halftime with a tight hamstring, but Howe says it’s “too early to say” if he will miss this weekend’s clash with former club Bournemouth.

“Callum was feeling a tightness in his hamstring, so that forced our hand as well with the other substitution, so we are really stretched,” Howe said.

Kieran Trippier could also be seen pointing to his thigh during the game, but Howe assuaged fears that it might be a serious issue.

“No, I think he’s okay,” he added. “He had a bit of a dead leg from the Arsenal game and they can be sore for a few days, but not a muscle problem.”
