The 2021 summer transfer window looks set to be a crucial one for Barnsley.

Having exceeded the expectations of many with their remarkable run to the Championship play-offs, the Tykes will now be looking to strengthen their side in the market, in order to push on from that success next season.

Indeed, it seems the club are already taking steps towards doing that, with journalist Pete O’Rourke reporting that the club are in talks over the signing of Emiliano Marcondes.

Despite playing a key role in Brentford’s play-off final win over Swansea that secured their promotion to the Premier League, Marcondes is a free agent, having been released by the Bees following the expiry of his contract.

Barnsley’s Championship rivals Nottingham Forest are also said to be interested in Marcondes, but it would certainly be an exciting piece of business by the Tykes if they can bring him to Oakwell this summer.

Are these 20 facts about Barnsley's five most expensive signings true or false?

At 26-years-old and with well over 200 senior appearances under his belt, Marcondes could bring some welcome experience to a relatively young set of midfield options for Barnsley.

Were that to happen, then you imagine the Dane would likely find himself partnering Alex Mowatt in the centre of midfield, provided the current Barnsley man signs a new deal at the club, with his current one expiring this summer.

That could push Romal Palmer down the pecking order at Oakwell, although if Mowatt does not sign a new Barnsley contract, then it could be the the 22-year-old – who ended the season as a regular part of the Tykes’ XI for the first time in his Barnsley career – who Marcondes finds himself alongside next season.

It is also worth noting that Marcondes is capable of playing in the left-wing role, which could see him offer some useful cover for the likes of Carlton Morris on that side of the Barnsley attack.

Indeed, that versatility could certainly be useful for Barnsley if they could add Marcondes to their side, so their does seem to be incentive there for them to try and complete a deal for the 26-year-old.
