Man Utd travel to France to face Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals tonight.
The two sides been drawn against each other twice before, both in the Champions League. On both occasions, a draw in France was followed by a one-goal victory for United at Old Trafford. It has been over 17 years since the teams last faced each other, however.
United are on track for their worst ever Premier League finish, occupying 13th place in the Premier League table. Despite this, they are still the only side to maintain an unbeaten record in the Europa League this season.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of the clash…

TNT Sports 1 or streaming on Discovery+
Lyon: Malick Fofana (out), Ernest Nuamah (out), Duje Caleta-Car (doubt)
Lyon are without a pair of talented wingers, as both Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah are out. Experienced defender Dude Caleta-Car has also been absent since representing Croatia in the last international break.
Man Utd: Lisandro Martinez (out), Amad Diallo (out), Jonny Evans (out), Kobbie Mainoo (doubt), Mathijs de Ligt (out), Toby Collyer (out)
United have been boosted by the return of Kobbie Mainoo in training, although it is unclear if he will be involved tonight. Luke Shaw has also returned to the United squad but he is also being managed carefully. Mathijs de Ligt missed out for the Reds at the weekend and will again miss out, as will Toby Collyer.
Lyon (4-2-3-1): Perri; Maitland-Niles, Mata, Niakhate, Tagliafico; Tessmann, Matic; Cherki, Tolisso, Mikauatdze; Lacazette
Man United (3-4–2-1): Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
Lyon are facing a possible relegation to Ligue 2 due to their ongoing financial troubles despiye sitting fifth in Ligue 1 and just four points behind second-placed Marseille. They have a seriously talented squad with young stars like Rayan Cherki mixed with experienced top level players, such as Alexandre Lacazette. Lyon cruised through the round of 16, demolishing FCSB by a 7-1 aggregate score and have won six of the last seven in all competitions.
United are still in the bottom half of the table but they are starting to show some signs of improvement under Ruben Amorim. The Reds have lost just one of their last six in the league. They defeated Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the last round and they remain undefeated in the Europa League this season, and drew 0-0 with rivals Man City in their last outing.
There has been a war of words ahead of the match after United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana declared: “Of course, it’s not going to be easy. But I think we are way better than them.”
Ex-United and current Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic responded to the comments in brutal fashion: “If David De Gea or Peter Schmeichel or van der Sar says that then I will question myself. But if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history then he needs to show that before he says it.”
Onana then continued the back-and-forth. The Cameroonian posted on social media: “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
United manager Ruben Amorim played it down as a misunderstanding, he said: “I know Nemanja Matic really well and he is a good guy.”
On his opposition. he added: “They play different football since Paulo Fonseca came in, they are winning more games, scoring more goals. A strong team physically but they have a style that’s based on possession.”
