England host Latvia at Wembley tonight in their second qualifier for the 2026 World Cup. After a controlled but unconvincing 2-0 win over Albania on Friday, all eyes are on how Thomas Tuchel’s side evolves. “Still, Tuchel will no doubt be looking for improvements,” especially given the sporadic flatness under the arch during that opening fixture.
Myles Lewis-Skelly and Harry Kane delivered the goals that night, but the performance lacked the rhythm expected of a team with serious ambitions. At no point did England appear vulnerable, yet the conviction of their display left room for refinement.
Latvia are unlikely to offer the same resistance as Albania. This is not to diminish their spirit, but their technical and tactical ceiling is notably lower. “It would be a major disappointment not to see England turn on the style in front of their home supporters,” and Tuchel knows that a lacklustre showing would do little to convince an already watchful public.
For Tuchel, results are only part of the picture. His brief is clear: restore England’s reputation on the world stage and deliver a squad capable of reaching the summit in 2026. “Beating Latvia by any margin is unlikely to offer any real clue as to whether or not his side will be able to do it,” but performance matters. It’s not just qualification—it’s how they qualify.
Tuchel needs a statement showing, not simply to silence sceptics but to signal a new identity. “So much has been made about England’s playing style over the past few years,” and June’s fixtures are still distant. This is a moment to sharpen, assert, and inspire.
