Sheffield United are in a good position in the Championship as we enter the second half of the campaign, sitting in third.
Despite picking up just one point from a possible nine over the Christmas and New Year’s period, United are still only three points off top spot, which is occupied by Leeds United.
The main issue Chris Wilder currently has is a lack of options to choose from due to multiple injuries and an illness impacting several players in the squad. The Blades’ festive spirits were dampened on Boxing Day when they suffered defeat at home to Burnley, and more importantly lost Harry Souttar to a season-ending Achilles injury. As a result, the big Australian defender has returned to his parent club Leicester City.
If there was ever a good time to lose one of your key players it would be just before you head into the January transfer window. But, Souttar isn’t the only player the Blades need to replace; promising midfielder Oliver Arblaster suffered a season-ending knee injury prior to Souttar’s injury.
Now, Sheffield United, under their new owners, will need to make three or four signings this month to bolster their squad, ready to reinvigorate their promotion push.
In a season where every point matters, the influence of Sheffield United’s twelfth man cannot be understated. In the previous two promotions to the Premier League, the Sheffield United fan base played a vital role. The Blades finished the 2018/19 season as the best home side in the Championship, helping them to finish second during Wilder’s first tenure at the club. The promotion under Paul Heckingbottom (2022/23) saw United finish as the second-best home team in the league, on their way to finishing second.
Currently, Wilder’s side are the second-best home team in the league, and if they can maintain this then history suggests they will be right up there come the end of this campaign. In order to do that, the squad needs investment in the January transfer window, and the S2 faithful need to continue to push their team on.
