Inter Milan were keen on signing Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah in the summer and they could return with a bid in January, depending on Paris Saint-Germain and Romelu Lukaku…

Chalobah burst onto the scene for Chelsea at the start of the 2020-21 season, scoring on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace.

But the 23-year-old has made just 21 appearances for the Blues in the top flight and was thought to be keen on a loan move to Inter in the summer in search of game time.

But according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Inter ‘could not commit’ to ‘an expensive loan with an option to buy’, while Chelsea wanted an obligation to buy included in the deal.

The clubs have been in frequent contact in recent months due to the deal which saw Lukaku return to the San Siro on loan, and the report states that the Belgium international, due to his freindship with Chalobah, ‘could be key to getting him in January‘.

Lukaku ‘would have pushed personally to get his friend to Milan’ and Chalobah, for his part, is ‘eager to get back in the game and prove he is ready for a top club’.

But it’s claimed a move for Chalobah ‘remains closely linked’ to the future of Milan Skriniar.

After interest in the summer, PSG still want the centre-back, and his sale would give Inter room for manoeuvre to add to their squad, with Chalobah considered the ‘first blow’ as they look to rebuild their squad.

New Chelsea boss Graham Potter used Chalobah in a defensive midfield role in a friendly against Brighton this week, suggesting he may be looking to move him from centre-back in th short-term at least.

But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said over the weekend that there is a chance Chalobah could indeed be leaving in January, with AC Milan and RB Leipzig interested along with Inter.

“Chelsea need to clarify situations with some players, and one of those is Trevoh Chalobah. During the summer, he wanted a move, just on loan because he wanted to play,” Romano said.

“In the end, despite negotiations with Inter Milan, AC Milan and RB Leipzig, Chelsea decided to keep Chalobah at the club. They changed their position in a few days, they decided they wanted to keep him.

“Still, at the moment, he’s not finding any space at Chelsea. He wants to be an important player, but it’s not happening. I’m told there are still conversations around Chalobah, so there is still a chance for him to leave in January.

“Whether it’s a loan, or a permanent move with a buy-back clause, we will see, because nothing has been decided, but there is a serious possibility for him to leave if his situation doesn’t improve.

“As I mentioned, Inter, AC Milan and Leipzig were really interested in the summer, so January could be an important month for Chalobah.”
