Gustavo Hamer's future at Sheffield United could be at risk following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland
Gustavo Hamer’s future at Sheffield United will now be the subject of speculation following their failure to gain Premier League promotion.
The Blades suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium last weekend, consigning the club to another year in the second division.
Chris Wilder’s team initially took the lead in the first half through Tyrese Campbell, with an excellent pass from Hamer setting up the forward.
His performances in the Championship this year have earned the 27-year-old a lot of plaudits, which could lead to transfer interest in the wake of the Yorkshire outfit’s setback.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to look at how much Sheffield United might save if he does depart this summer…
Hamer signed for Sheffield United in the summer of 2023 following the club’s promotion to the Premier League under Paul Heckingbottom.
It was reported by The Athletic that a deal worth £15 million was agreed between the Blades and Coventry City in order to secure his signature.
Hamer signed a deal until the summer of 2027, with the playmaker currently earning £30,000 per week with Sheffield United.
The average salary at Bramall Lane is £17,417 per week, meaning the Dutchman is at the high end of the club’s wage bill.
His departure would save the club money that could be reinvested elsewhere, with his annual salary amounting to £1.56 million per year.
It was reported by Teamtalk earlier this month that Hamer is a potential transfer target for Everton.
With Sheffield United’s defeat in the play-off final, the player’s transfer value will have taken a hit and the prospect of a move to the Premier League will be enticing.
The Blades will be fearful of Hamer’s exit, but it could become a reality after their loss to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.
The forward contributed nine goals and seven assists from 41 appearances in the Championship last year, with the team earning 90 points on their way to third in the table.
Despite Hamer’s importance to Wilder’s team, he is not the highest earning player in the first team squad.
Instead, Rhian Brewster is currently on the biggest weekly salary, with the striker earning £35,000 per week.
Anel Ahmedhodzic, Tom Davies and Vini Souza join Hamer in being the second-best paid players in Wilder’s squad, with all four receiving £30,000 each week.
Other key players in the team include Kieffer Moore and Tom Cannon, with the pair on deals worth £25,000-a-week.
Given Hamer has a deal that runs for another two years, there won’t be an immediate need for the Blades to cash in on him, should Everton come in with an offer.
However, the opportunity to make the switch to the Premier League will be one Hamer might want to pursue.
Their loss to Sunderland has reduced their leverage in negotiations, as Sheffield United cannot offer him top flight football for at least another year.
