Wrexham are preparing for life in the Championship after a third promotion in a row last season
Wrexham are set to have a £25 million transfer budget to spend this summer ahead of their Championship campaign.
According to GiveMeSport, co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have ensured there will be money to spend to improve Phil Parkinson’s side in the transfer window.
The Red Dragons earned a remarkable third promotion in a row last season, coming up from League One at the first attempt.
This will be Wrexham’s first year back in the second tier of English football since 1982, having been a non-league team as recently as 2023.
It has been reported that Wrexham have a budget of £25 million to spend this summer in order to bolster their squad.
Parkinson’s aim will be to establish the club in the second division beyond just one season, as their ambitions start to come across rivals with far greater resources than them.
It was reported by Alan Nixon earlier this week that West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell is now on their radar as a potential signing this transfer window.
The Telegraph also claimed earlier this month that Fulham’s Tom Cairney is also on their radar, with both players likely to be free agents this summer.
However, it’s understood that the Championship side are planning to be patient in the market.
It’s believed that Parkinson’s squad will be bolstered significantly, as they look to attack the second tier with great enthusiasm over the next 12 months.
Wrexham earned promotion to League One last year with a second place finish in League Two.
Parkinson’s side were immediately competitive in the third tier, and fought off the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Stockport County and Charlton Athletic to earn second in the table.
While they finished 21 points behind leaders Birmingham City, their haul of 92 points still proved enough for second place.
Wrexham will now be aiming to avoid the bottom three in the Championship next year.
Wrexham won’t be happy to just come 21st in the Championship next season, as they will want to hit the ground running and be competitive.
The Red Dragons will have a lot of work to do to meet the rise in competitiveness, and it won’t be as easy to immediately fight at the top as it has been for them in the last couple years.
They’ve shown a willingness to spend under their current owners, but their resources will struggle to match a lot of the clubs in the Championship.
Having said that, a £25 million transfer budget is a strong sign, and smart recruitment should see them do well next year.
