Despite having just captained his boyhood Black Cats to the Premier League, Dan Neil could be departing for Serie A this summer.
Sunderland captain Dan Neil played a vital role in helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2024/25.
The 23-year-old Black Cats academy graduate skippered his side to a Championship play-off final victory over Sheffield United, cementing the club's place back in the top flight next season for the first time since 2017.
However, he's been leaving his mark in Sunderland's side, and indeed on the Championship, for a number of seasons now, and firmly established himself as one of the best central midfielders in the second tier as a result.
But, despite having just celebrated promotion to the Premier League, he could be set to depart Wearside this summer, as journalist Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon has revealed that Italian giants AS Roma have made him a transfer target.
So, just how much money can Sunderland expect to receive should Neil leave for the Serie A side this summer? Football League World investigates...
As per Nixon's report on 1 June, Neil has emerged as a 'shock target' for AS Roma.
Neil is said to be aware of Roma's interest in acquiring his services, and there looks to be a genuine possibility that a deal could be struck this summer.
But how much for? Well, according to Nixon, Sunderland and Roma could find an agreement at around £15m.
Neil made 48 total appearances for Regis Le Bris' side last season, scoring two goals and providing a further three assists.
His potential departure could see the heart of Le Bris' promotion-winning midfield ripped out this summer, with major transfer interest in both Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg respectively.
As such, Sunderland would surely be loathed to lose their skipper, but it remains to be seen whether they feel a £15m offer is too good to turn down for him.
Undoubtedly impacting Neil's transfer value will be his contract situation at the Stadium of Light.
The fan-favourite midfielder is set to enter the 2025/26 season with just 12 months remaining on his contract with the Wearsiders, meaning this summer transfer window could well be the last chance for the club to bank a big payday for him.
Sunderland also don't have the option to trigger any extension to that deal either, meaning he is only contracted at the club until next summer.
Therefore, the Black Cats don't hold too many cards if/when they are summoned to the negotiation table by another club.
Given Sunderland is his boyhood club, and the fact that he has the chance to live out a dream and captain them in the Premier League next season, it's probably safe to assume Neil wouldn't want to leave Wearside this summer in an ideal world.
However, he will also understand that he has to do what's best for himself and his career, and if a new deal can't be struck, then securing what would surely be a financially lucrative and long-term contract with AS Roma this summer could set him up for a lengthy career in a top European league.
A fascinating summer awaits in the career of Dan Neil, that's for sure.
