It has been a difficult first couple of months for Johannes Hoff Thorup, who took charge of the club back in May. The 35-year-old has had to endure a number of challenges already, including the departures of some key players from last season's squad.

Gabriel Sara was arguably their standout performer last season, but Thorup has not had the pleasure of coaching him, as he departed for Galatasaray over the summer. In addition to that, Jon Rowe, who also enjoyed a strong 2023/24 campaign, has departed on loan for Marseille, with an obligation to buy.

Thorup is unfortunate in the fact that his side have lost such key individuals from last season, and that is without mentioning Adam Idah and Abu Kamara, who left the club after having fantastic loan spells elsewhere last season.

Norwich have, on paper, lost out on a lot of goals with such important attacking players leaving the club, so the likes of Josh Sargent are having to really up their game this season.

Sargent has been a popular figure at Carrow Road over the last couple of seasons, and there was talk of him also leaving the club, which would have been a disaster, but thankfully nothing materialised.

The American will be hugely important to the club this season, so today FLW looks at how much he earns per week and decides whether that reflects his importance.

As expected, Sargent is at the top end of Norwich's highest-earner list, but perhaps a little lower than many may expect. According to Capology, the forward is earning an estimated £25k per week with the Canaries, which totals to a rough annual salary of £1.3 million. Midfielder, Kenny McLean, and goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, are estimated to be earning the same amount as the American.

Surprisingly, there are four Norwich City players earning more than Sargent. The experienced pair of Ashley Barnes and Grant Hanley are both earning an estimated £30k per week, with Jack Stacey and Shane Duffy sitting at the top of the list, both on an estimated £35k a week.

Sargent still has four years remaining on his contract, meaning he is still to be paid an estimated £5.2 million, which is more than anyone in the squad by some distance.

Sargent is one of Norwich's most important players this season

As mentioned, with the departures of Gabriel Sara and Jon Rowe, the Canaries are now having to find goals from elsewhere, and that is where Sargent comes in.

The forward has been influential in attack over the last couple of seasons, having scored 16 league goals last season, and 13 the season prior.

His versatility means that he can play as the sole striker, on the wing or even behind the striker, which will be key for Thorup this season.

There is an argument to be had that Sargent should be Norwich's highest earner due to his goals and importance to the team, but a few of the more experienced pros are on slightly higher wages.
