The Magpies defender's wage will surprise some at the Riverside Stadium.
Middlesbrough are set to secure a loan move for experienced left-back Matt Targett, currently on the books of their North East rivals, Newcastle United.
It has been an impressive start to life for Boro under the management of Rob Edwards thus far, with the Teesside outfit one of just three sides to have maintained a 100 percent winning record across the first two sets of Championship fixtures, as well as making a plethora of shrewd transfer dealings in the process.
The former Luton Town boss has seen an overhaul in the Reds' defence during his short time in charge too, with Adilson Malanda, Alfie Jones and Callum Brittain all moving to the Riverside Stadium, whilst the highly-rated Rav van den Berg and experienced full-back, Anfernee Dijksteel, have been among those to leave the club.
Such a theme is set to continue heading into the final week of business of the summer, with the aforementioned Targett set to make a temporary switch to Boro after falling out of favour at St James' Park despite the Magpies' on-pitch success and upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.
And whilst it is another smart recruit, some supporters may be shocked at the 29-year-old's salary on Tyneside as Middlesbrough look to conclude the deal behind-the-scenes.
Targett has spent the majority of his lengthy career as a Premier League performer, initially progressing through the ranks at Southampton, going on to sign for Aston Villa in 2019 for £11m, eventually moving to his current employers on loan in January 2022 before making a £15m permanent switch three years ago on a four-year contract.
The full-back has since made 47 appearances for Eddie Howe's side in the past three-and-a-half years, in which he has competed with the likes of Dan Burn and Lewis Hall for a starting berth as the Magpies continue to cement themselves as European contenders under their well-documented Saudi ownership.
As a result of him signing for the club at the very start of their current era, Capology states that Targett collects a staggering £100,000 per week according to their verifications, which equates to £5.2m across a season, meaning that in the past three full seasons of his Newcastle career, the defender has earned £15.6m if correct.
What may surprise Boro supporters even more is that there are only six players on the books at St James' Park who collect a higher pay packet - Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Joelinton, Alexander Isak, Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali.
Targett made just two Premier League appearance for the club last season amid fitness issues, with his last appearance for Newcastle coming in the FA Cup Fifth Round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on 2 March.
Whilst it is obvious that Middlesbrough and Newcastle would have to negotiate a split in terms of how Targett's wages are paid between the respective clubs, the left-back would be the Championship's highest earner if a move is finalised in the coming days.
At present, the second-tier's wealthiest player is Harry Winks of Leicester City, who earns an ESTIMATED £90,000 per week.
This would significantly increase Steve Gibson's wage bill at the Riverside too, with the top earner currently on Boro's payroll being yet another vastly experienced full-back in the form of Luke Ayling, who is ESTIMATED to earn a weekly figure of £30,000.
Regardless, the temporary signing of Targett will significantly bolster Edwards' rearguard, which has already looked sound in the first two games as they are yet to be breached, as well as providing significant competition for Sammy Silvera and Alex Bangura.
