Ipswich Town's Liam Delap has a release clause of £30m if the club are relegated, with Man Utd and Chelsea keen on the striker.
Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap will be available for £30m if the side is relegated to the Championship, amid interest from Chelsea and Man United.
After successive promotions, the Tractor Boys have unsurprisingly found it tough in the Premier League, and a 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves on Saturday means relegation now seems inevitable, as Kieran McKenna’s men are 12 points from safety with just seven games to go.
Despite the struggles, there’s no denying that Delap has been the real success story of the season for Ipswich.
The England U21 international has scored 12 goals in 30 games, and he has impressed with his all-round game when leading the line.
Therefore, it’s understandable that Delap is attracting interest, with recent reports claiming that Man Utd and Chelsea are among the clubs keen on the striker.
And, in a fresh development, the Guardian has revealed that Delap will be available for £30m if Ipswich are relegated.
They explain that the former Man City youngster, who joined Ipswich in a deal worth up to £20m, has a release clause as part of the agreement, with the price falling to that figure if Ipswich go down.
Even the most optimistic Ipswich fan will know that it was going to be a very big ask to keep Delap in the Championship - and this relatively cheap release clause probably ends those slim chances.
Finding a striker that gets you 10 to 15 goals is a priority for most in the top-flight, and Delap has shown he can do that with a side that is struggling towards the bottom of the league.
As outlined above, it’s not just the goals either. Delap is a complete forward in that he will run the channels, hold the ball up, and he can be a great focal point.
When you take into account that he is only 22, and has the potential to get even better, many will view the £30m release clause as a potential bargain, so you would expect a battle for his signature.
From Delap’s perspective, he will appreciate how things have gone at Ipswich, but the reality is that he needs to be playing in the Premier League at this stage of his career.
He will no doubt have ambitions of making the England squad for the World Cup in 2026, so Delap needs to pick his next move carefully.
For Ipswich, this will be a blow, especially as their star man could’ve commanded a bigger fee, but that money will help if they are relegated, and you can be sure that McKenna will be pushing to reinvest as much of it as possible into the side, with a replacement for Delap likely to be the priority when the window opens.
