It’s fair to say it wasn’t a great weekend for Premier League officials.
There were several controversial incidents that the referees, quite frankly, got wrong.
Whether it was disallowing West Ham’s late equaliser against Chelsea, chalking off Newcastle’s goal against Crystal Palace, prematurely flagging Philippe Coutinho for offside before he scored against Manchester City or missing Virgil van Dijk’s potential red card challenge on Amadou Onana during the Merseyside derby, the officiating was far below the standard we expect.
And that’s just a few incidents on the very same day.
.
“‘Minimum interference, maximum benefit’, was what we were told when VAR was brought in,” Shearer began.
When talking about Newcastle’s disallowed goal during their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, where Joe Willock was adjudged to have fouled Vicente Guaita, with the VAR officials missing that Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell had pushed Willock into the goalkeeper, Shearer said: “They should be told to stay out of it the VAR officials. This was never ever, ever a foul. And I don’t think anyone who has played the game will agree with the VAR Jared Gillett and the referee Andy Madley.”
West Ham also saw a goal disallowed when Jarrod Bowen was accused of fouling Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy before Maxwell Cornet smashed the ball home.
“The keeper [Mendy] goes down because he realises he’s made a wreck,” Shearer said. “[Jarrod] Bowen just steps over him, he doesn’t interfere with the play.
“We saw Michael Oliver stick to his decision when he went over to the monitor [to review a penalty incident in Bournemouth’s win over Nottingham Forest]. Why doesn’t he [Madley] stick to his decision?
“It’s a beyond terrible, disgraceful decision.
“The referee Michael Salisbury actually gets it right he gives the goal. It’s Lee Mason and the VAR who somehow bizarrely tell him, ‘you’ve made a howler’.
“They tell him to go to the screen but they don’t show him all he angles, they miss the most clear one. He has had no help from the VAR whatsoever.
“As I keep saying, VAR is not the problem the people running it are.”
Shearer rounded it of by saying: “Players and managers from various football clubs have been let down today by decisions like that.
“It’s been a terrible day. You work hard all week to put into practice what you learn on the training ground and then you’re let down. It’s not right.”
So, who are the Premier League referees this season?
There are 16 on-field officials. They are:
Using data collected by sportekz and Sporting Free, it’s claimed that referees earn £1,500 per match. That’s on top of their salary that can range from £70,000-£200,000.
That’s not including a yearly retainer worth £38,500 to £42,000.
For context, the average annual salary in the UK in 2021 was £25,971.
Meanwhile, assistant referees earn a £30,000 salary and collect match fees of £850.
Video Assistant Referees also pick up £850 per match.
Last season, the likes of Martin Atkinson, Michael Oliver and Mike Dean were all paid a £200,000-per-year annual salary. They then receive their £1,500 match fee.
Atkinson retired at the end of last season, while Dean is now operating as a VAR.
