McCarthy has been with the Saints since 2016, joining from Crystal Palace, initially signing as their second-choice between the sticks.

He earned his way to first-choice during the 2017-18 campaign, before falling back down the pecking order during 2021-22.

His future is now up in the air going into the summer, especially with his contract set to expire at the end of June.

Alex McCarthy’s Southampton salary

McCarthy is currently on an estimated salary worth up to £50,000 per week at Southampton.

He is one of the top five earners at the club, behind the likes of Joe Aribo, Stuart Armstrong, Jan Bednarek and Adam Armstrong.

The highest earner, Aribo, is taking home £70,000-a-week. Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is earning £20,000 each week.

Although he is Russell Martin’s preferred option between the sticks, he is far less senior in terms of experience in football and at Southampton.

The Ireland international arrived at St. Mary’s in the summer of 2023 from Manchester City, and is only 21-years-old.

This has led to him receiving a lower salary than McCarthy, with another goalkeeper, Joe Lumley, receiving an even lower figure of £10,000 per week.

Bazunu’s long-term injury issue has caused some headaches for Southampton going into the summer market, increasing the value of a good second-choice to Martin.

The Irishman won’t be expected back in time for the start of next season, so someone else will have to step up to the role of first-choice for an extended period after McCarthy deputised at the end of the Championship campaign.

Alex McCarthy’s transfer options

A move to Liverpool, Celtic or Newcastle could all be quite tempting for McCarthy, who will have to weigh up his future once the Saints’ season comes to an end.

The two Premier League sides will both likely be looking to sign the 34-year-old as a second-choice option, while Celtic may be looking at him as a replacement for Joe Hart.

Liverpool’s current second choice, Caoimhín Kelleher (pictured), currently earns £10,000 per week, but is similar to Bazunu in that he is still quite young and inexperienced, so McCarthy may be unwilling to accept that level of salary given what he currently earns.

Martin Dubravka has stepped in as first choice at Newcastle this year during Nick Pope’s injury absence, but he is firmly behind the England international when available.

The Slovakian is paid £40,000-a-week by the Magpies, a figure closer in line to what McCarthy might be expecting.

Meanwhile, Hart is currently heading into the final couple of games of his career before retiring at the end of the season, so he could be seen as a replacement for the former England international.

The Southampton keeper will surely be considering all of these figures as he mulls over his options this summer.
