Milan had a €17m offer for France international Youssouf Fofana unceremoniously rejected earlier in the transfer window, but the Rossoneri are planning to come back in with a fresh proposal for the 25-year-old, even if Manchester United remain interested in him.
Fofana is one of two French midfielders Milan have been monitoring this transfer window. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Manu Kone, a similar player in profile, has also been linked with a move to San Siro.
Fofana is into the final year of his contract in Ligue 1. Knowing that his exit before the end of the transfer window was a strong possibility, Monaco put a €25m price tag on the former Strasbourg midfielder.
However, after rumoured interest from the likes of Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and later West Ham United, the price reportedly went up to around €35m.
Milan’s initial offer, meanwhile, was in the region of €17m, confident they would be able to get a discount on the original asking price, given Fofana’s contract situation.
Of the aforementioned clubs, only Manchester United remain, and according to Calciomercato.com, Erik ten Hag’s side are still lurking in the shadows.
According to reports on Saturday afternoon, Rossoneri director Geoffrey Moncada is working hard in a diplomatic sense to smooth things over with Monaco.
Calciomercato.com report that Milan could be prepared to increase their offer to €20m, while also including a future sell-on clause, which could eventually net Monaco the original €25m they had asked for earlier in the summer.
