Blues are closing in on an instant return to the third tier, but there are other targets on their mind.

Birmingham City head into this week knowing that they can secure promotion to the Championship on Tuesday if results go their way, as they play the first of their two games in hand against Peterborough United.

Their mid-week clash against the Posh is the dress rehearsal for Sunday's Vertu Trophy final at Wembley Stadium, but there are important matters at hand that Blues must tend to first before they can think about this weekend's game.

Chris Davies' side can win promotion back to the second tier if they beat Peterborough at the West Homes Stadium, or if Wycombe Wanderers drop points to Huddersfield Town on the same night.

Nevertheless, this is just the first step for Birmingham in a month that should surely see them lift the League One title, and they will have their eyes on a couple of records along the way.

How Birmingham can beat Aston Villa's and Wolves' third tier records

With 92 points on the board, and seven games left to play for Blues this season, it looks incredibly likely that they will reach the 100-point mark before the end of the campaign.

However, they know that the first of two records that are held by fellow West Midlands sides, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, could be broken in the space of the next four matches.

Wolves currently have the highest points total in League One history, accruing 103 during the 2013/14 season as they made an instant return to the Championship following a double relegation that saw them drop from the Premier League to the third tier in the space of two years.

Birmingham can reach 113 points, a figure that would blow their current record away and leave them in a league of their own.

However, there is another record that Davies may have one eye on, as Blues look to re-take some of the pride in the battle for bragging rights in the second city.

During the 1971/72 season, Aston Villa won 32 of their 46 games in the old Division Three to secure the league title, recording the most victories in a single campaign in the third level of English football.

With 28 wins to their name already, Birmingham will have to take three points in five of their final seven matches, but they have every chance of doing so with their form so strong in recent weeks.

Birmingham's final seven games are enticing

Blues have dominated League One this season, and have beaten just about everyone in their path, but they do have seven matches still to contend with that Davies will be keen to see out professionally.

This starts with Peterborough on Tuesday, and with just one of the current top 10 to play, Birmingham will fancy their chances of taking the two records off the hands of Aston Villa and Wolves.

They have to play three of the bottom four from now until the end of the campaign, and while these games will be tough as they will be fighting for their lives at the foot of the table, the quality that Blues have at their disposal should see them through.

With three wins in three in their back pocket, Birmingham will be looking to end the season on a high and carry over their momentum into the Championship for 2025/26.
