FLW look at Josh Sargent's wages as Nottingham Forest eye a move for the Norwich City striker.
Norwich City's Josh Sargent has steadily evolved into a superb Championship striker, with only injuries preventing him from enjoying truly prolific goalscoring seasons.
The American forward was signed by the Canaries from Werder Bremen in 2021 for a fee of £8 million. During a dismal season in which Norwich amassed just 22 points, he managed only four goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.
Since then, he has spent three seasons in the Championship, boasting an exemplary record. This season, he has netted 14 goals in 26 league appearances, following previous campaigns in which the Norwich number nine scored 16 and 13 respectively.
The most impressive aspect of this is his goal-per-minute ratio, with Sargent averaging a goal every 164 minutes. This equates to a 25-goal season if he played every match, but injuries have disrupted his time at Carrow Road.
Nevertheless, he seems ready for a return to the top flight and Nottingham Forest have reportedly sent scouts to watch the 25-year-old. Sky Sports' Florian Pettenburg has also claimed other Premier League sides are interested, with a move back to Germany potentially on the cards as well.
Forest are in the midst of a special season in the top flight with Nuno Espírito Santo's side battling it out for a Champions League spot. Their current options up front are Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi, but with the former ageing and the latter struggling for consistency, a move for Sargent appears to be a sensible option.
With this in mind, Football League World has examined his current wages at Norwich and what they could look like should he make the step-up to the City Ground.
Sargent's initial contract at Carrow Road provided him with a healthy wage for his age, with the then 21-year-old earning £12,115 per week. This amounted to an annual salary of £630,000 - significantly lower than the club’s highest earners during that Premier League season, including Brandon Williams (£3.38 million) and Ozan Kabak (£3.12 million).
The American remained on this wage for another season before signing a new contract in 2023, which more than doubled his weekly earnings to £25,000.
Now on an annual salary of £1.3 million, his wages placed him among the club’s highest earners in the 2023-24 season, though still behind the likes of Ui-jo Hwang (£2.34 million) and Ben Gibson (£2.08 million).
This campaign, Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side appears to have implemented a slight wage reduction, with their top earners now receiving £35,000 per week. While Sargent remains just below this figure, his weekly earnings make him the third-highest-paid player at the club.
To assess what Sargent could potentially earn at the City Ground, we have examined Nottingham Forest's current wage structure, including the salaries of their strikers.
In a season where they are chasing a return to European football, Forest’s highest earners are Nikola Milenković (£105,000 per week) and Chris Wood (£90,000 per week), with the club’s average weekly wage standing at £34,129.
Among Espírito Santo’s other striking options, Awoniyi earns £50,000 per week. If these figures are accurate, Sargent would likely command a similar wage, given his impressive goalscoring record in the Championship.
Should he secure a £50,000-a-week deal, his annual salary would rise to £2.6 million - double his current earnings at Carrow Road.
