Comparing James Tarkowski's Everton wages to what he earned during his time at Burnley
James Tarkowski made the switch from Burnley to Everton in the summer of 2022 following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
The centre-back was a key part of Sean Dyche’s plans at Turf Moor, but his departure and the club’s decline into the Championship led to his departure.
The 32-year-old has been a key figure for the Toffees in the seasons since, starting each league game across the last three years.
He’s helped the Merseyside outfit remain in the Premier League, with the team finishing 17th and 15th in the last two campaigns.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to look at how his wages at Everton compare to his time at Burnley…
Tarkowski signed for the Clarets in the 2016 January transfer window, arriving from Brentford as the club gained promotion to the top flight.
His initial contract with the Lancashire outfit saw him earning £13,000 per week in Dyche’s side.
It took the centre-back a couple of seasons before he became a crucial part of the Burnley squad, only playing 23 times between the 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns.
However, by 2017/18, he was an established starter in Dyche’s team, and was earning £45,000 per week.
Tarkowski’s salary increased again to £50,000-a-week in the 2018/19 season, which he continued to earn until his departure from the club in 2022.
During this period, he was a nailed-on starter for the Clarets, making 144 appearances in the Premier League across these four terms.
Burnley earned 15th, 10th, 17th and 18th place finishes, ultimately leading to their return to the Championship.
While the club were able to turn things around the following year under Vincent Kompany to earn a place back in the top flight, Tarkowski was not around for that achievement after signing for Everton as a free agent.
Tarkowski made the switch to Everton and signed a deal that earned him a salary worth £100,000 per week.
The defender has been a crucial figure for the club in that time, becoming one of their highest paid players in the process.
The best paid player in David Moyes’ squad is currently Abdoulaye Doucouré, who receives £130,000 per week from the Toffees.
Jordan Pickford is their second best-paid star, earning £125,000 per week, having established himself as England’s number one goalkeeper since moving from Sunderland in 2017.
Idrissa Gueye is the only other player in the Everton squad on a bigger salary than Tarkowski, £120,000, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also on £100,000-a-week.
Meanwhile, the best paid player in the current Burnley squad is Josh Brownhill.
The midfielder is now club captain, as well as their top scorer in the Championship as they pursue promotion to the Premier League.
But he is earning £45,000 per week, less than half of what Tarkowski receives since making the move away from Turf Moor.
Given his contract is up in the summer, the 29-year-old may opt to follow in the defender’s footsteps and walk away from Burnley in the summer in the pursuit of a larger wage.
