Luton Town were one of the clubs to benefit from the influx of new players brought in by Nottingham Forest after their promotion to the Premier League.

Though Brice Samba, Forest’s number one for much of their promotion-winning Championship campaign, was sold, the arrivals of Dean Henderson and Wayne Hennessey meant that Ethan Horvath was deemed excess to requirements.

The 27-year-old filled in admirably for Samba at times in 2021/22 and was sent back on loan to the second tier in the summer. From Luton’s perspective, there was optimism that bringing in the American could help to solve their goalkeeping issue after using five different shot-stoppers last season.

It’s done exactly that. Horvath has started 29 of the Hatters’ 30 Championship games this term and has helped them climb to fourth in the table as we head toward the business end of the season.

The 2022/23 campaign has been a big one for the keeper, who made the US squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and is well on his way to the most productive season his career in terms of appearances. He has remained Luton’s number one despite a change in the dugout, with Nathan Jones leaving for an ill-fated spell in charge of Southampton and Rob Edwards replacing him.

Horvath’s 12 Championship clean sheets are second only to Coventry City’s Ben Wilson (13) while he’s been a key figure in the fourth meanest defence in the division – with Edwards’ side conceding 30 times in their 30 games.

His individual statistics are not quite as impressive, however, as Wyscout shows that the 31 goals that have been scored against him means he has underperformed against his expected conceded goals (xCG) of 26.38 while, as per Whoscored, he ranks joint-31st among second tier keepers in terms of saves per game (2.1).

True or false: The club was founded in 1875!

Edwards appears to be paying those sort of stats no notice, however, and labelled the Forest loanee “fantastic” last month.

The keeper’s loan deal expires in the summer and as his contract with the Reds runs until 2024, you’d imagine there will be decisions to be made at that point.

He’s proven this term that he’s a useful keeper at Championship level and so Forest may consider keeping hold of him if they’re relegated back to the second tier this term.

If they can secure Premier League survival, however, it would be no surprise for them to look to move the 27-year-old on.

“big impact” he’s made at Kenilworth Road, has hinted that they’d be interested in a permanent deal.
