When Joe Lumley and Dean Bouzanis arrived at Reading this summer, the writing seemed to be on the wall for Luke Southwood who wasn’t exactly fancied by Paul Ince during the second half of last season.

With Karl Hein suffering an injury, the former England international moved quickly to recruit Orjan Nyland, who was one of the first names on the teamsheet during his short spell at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Ince’s decision to release the Norwegian on the expiration of his contract in the summer looked set to give Southwood a chance, but Lumley arrived as the club’s first signing of the summer in June and with that, it looked as though he was going to be relegated to the bench.

A further blow for the Royals’ academy graduate came later that month when it was announced that Dean Bouzanis had put pen to paper on a contract – and it was previously unclear who would make the matchday squad.

During pre-season though, it became clear that the Australian would come out on top and with this, Southwood will have been pleased to secure a loan move to Cheltenham Town during the late stages of July after reportedly being deemed surplus to requirements.

At the Completely-Suzuki Stadium, he has started all nine of their League One games this season, keeping two clean sheets and conceding 12 goals in the process, not a terrible record.

However, his most notable moment of the season so far came in the Carabao Cup when his side lost 7-0 against Exeter City, a crushing blow for the Northern Ireland international who also conceded seven against Fulham earlier this calendar year.

He seems to have endured a reasonably steady start to life at the club, impressing against Exeter last month in a 1-0 victory as the Robins managed to get revenge on the Grecians.

Lumley may not be guaranteed to return to the SCL Stadium next season considering he only arrived on loan – but Southwood’s future in Berkshire is in doubt regardless and that’s why he will need to put himself in the shop window ahead of another potential move next summer.
