When Stoke City decided to sign Kevin Wimmer from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017, they would have been hoping that the defender would be able to help the club reach new heights in the Premier League.

Purchased for a fee believed to be in the region of £18m, the Austrian international ultimately failed to live up to expectations at the bet365 Stadium.

During his debut season at the club, Wimmer only managed to make 17 appearances in the top-flight as Stoke were relegated to the Championship.

Loaned out to Hannover 96 in 2018, the defender went on to feature on 24 occasions for the club in all competitions before returning to the Potters.

Stoke opted to grant another temporary exit for Wimmer as he moved to Mouscron in 2019.

18 appearances for Mouscron, the defender was briefly utilised by Stoke at Under-23 level who then decided to loan him out for the third time in as many seasons.

Following a stint with Karlsruher SC in the 2.Bundesliga, Wimmer finally sealed a permanent exit from the Potters as he joined Rapid Vienna earlier this year.

Since making this switch, the 29-year-old has played 14 games for his new side in all competitions.

Quiz: Have Stoke City ever won an away game at each of these 20 stadiums?

Despite starting in three of the club’s opening four league fixtures, Wimmer lost his place in the side in September and has recently been forced to watch on from the sidelines due to a groin injury.

When he is fit enough to return to action, it will be intriguing to see whether the defender is able to become a key player for Rapid Vienna.

Currently eighth in the Austrian Bundesliga standings, Rapid Vienna will be hoping to push on in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Wimmer’s former side Stoke will be aiming to get back to winning ways in the Championship this weekend in their showdown with Queens Park Rangers after recently suffering defeats to Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers.
