Joel Asoro flew out of the blocks as an 18-year-old at Sunderland in the 2017/18 season with his performances enough to earn him a move to Swansea City following the Black Cats’ relegation to League One.

In 11 starts and 15 substitute appearances Asoro added three goals and two assists as one of the bright sparks of a desperately poor campaign on Wearside.

He got his move to the Swansea.com Stadium in the summer of 2018 for just over £2 million but struggled to catch fire in South Wales.

Asoro was only trusted with four league starts by Graham Potter in 2018/19 and did not find the net for Swansea before being loaned to Groningen for the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Swede managed three goals and two assists in the Eredivisie in 2019/20 before a disastrous start to the 2020/21 season saw Asoro leave English football.

The 22-year-old could not force a league start at Genoa in the first half of the campaign and he was sold to Djurgardens in February 2021 for £630,000 according to Transfermarkt.

Asoro did finish the season strongly back in his home country however featuring in all 17 of Djurgardens’ final Allsvenskan matches to end the campaign.

At 22 there is still plenty of development Asoro can undergo and we may even see him return to the Football League at some point.

First things first though and establishing a regular starting spot at Djurgardens will be a priority considering the most appearances he has made in a season was still in the 2017/18 campaign with the Black Cats.
