Following such an underwhelming 2021/22 season, Joe Lumley may have been eager to get away from Middlesbrough this summer and enjoy a fresh start elsewhere.

The shot-stopper looked shaky at times for Boro last term and made quite a few costly mistakes during his 39 competitive appearances, persuading Chris Wilder to rebuild his goalkeeping department with the arrivals of Zack Steffen and Liam Roberts.

Even before the duo arrived though, the Teesside outfit sanctioned his loan move to Reading, with the Royals desperately in need of one or two shot-stoppers to come in following the departure of Orjan Nyland in the summer.

The Berkshire outfit could have offered the Norwegian a chance to remain at the Select Car Leasing Stadium beyond the summer – but opted against that in favour of recruiting Lumley.

His arrival was met by a mixed response from the Royals’ supporters – but many changed their minds when they saw him impress during their opening two league matches of this season.

The third game was a nightmare for the Boro man though – and was arguably at fault for three of Rotherham United’s goals as his current side fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the New York Stadium.

However, his response to that game was impeccable, responding straight away as he pulled off a crucial save in the second half of their 3-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers just days after their capitulation against the Millers.

He has missed just two of the Berkshire side’s competitive games this term, sitting out of their Carabao Cup tie against Stevenage before being ineligible to play against his parent club last month.

At this stage though, the 27-year-old is performing extremely well in Berkshire, showing real character to respond from his early setback in South Yorkshire to become loved by the Royals’ fanbase.
