Sunderland fans will fondly remember the spell Asamoah Gyan had in the famous red and white.
Gyan entered the summer transfer window of 2010 as an icon of world football following the World Cup in South Africa, with the Ghana international eventually ending up with Sunderland, who signed him for a club-record £13m.
The 2010/11 season brought 11 goals across all competitions and Gyan playing his part as Sunderland finished 10th in the Premier League.
There was a brace in a 2-0 win against Stoke City, a second-half equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham and a goal in a 3-0 win at Chelsea. In January 2011, the striker’s 90th minute goal rescued a point and a 1-1 draw with fierce rivals Newcastle United in a Tyne-Wear derby.

Gyan would move on after that whirlwind year, initially on loan, before joining Al Ain permanently. There would be spells with Shanghai SIPG, Al Ahli Dubai, Kayserispor, North East United and Legon Cities on the back of that at club level, all whilst Gyan continued to represent Ghana on the international scene.
Taking a look over on social media at the 36-year-old’s whereabouts now and it remains a colourful story.
Some of the forward’s most recent posts include Gyan supporting The KGL Foundation in a bid to build a “solid foundation” for the next generation of footballers in Ghana:
Gyan also recently posted a message following the Queen’s passing, sharing his condolence with the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth:
Just five days ago there was also a reminder of the all-dancing Gyan, full of the personality that we saw in full flow in English football over the 2010/11 campaign. The following post dragged in almost 20,000 likes on Instagram:
