The 29-year-old has practically gone full-circle with his career. He started out in League Two with Crewe Alexandra before reaching the heights of the Premier League and Champions League with Manchester United. It didn't work out there, so he dropped to the Championship with Wigan and Stoke before returning to League Two football.

Powell has earned two promotions so far in his career, one with Wigan to reach the Championship and one with Crewe Alexandra, for whom he scored a stunning half-volley into the top corner in the League Two play-off final victory. This campaign, Powell will be hoping for another promotion to his name with his new club, Stockport County.

During his time with Stoke City, he was popular with fans and became a key player for the club, especially in the 2021/22 Campaign when he scored twelve goals from the attacking midfield position. However, towards the end of his stint with the Potters, Powell suffered with a few injuries and he would sometimes spend weeks on the sidelines before returning. Powell was released in the summer, so let's see how he's been getting on since leaving the club.

Where is Nick Powell now?

Following his release by Stoke, Powell made the move to Greater Manchester to sign for League Two promotion hopefuls, Stockport County. The move immediately raised eyebrows as the once Manchester United 'wonderkid' was now playing League Two football before the age of 30.

Upon joining the Hatters, Powell stated "I’m really happy to be here and to be a part of what’s happening at County right now. I think everyone can see what an exciting journey the club is on, the ambitions that the owner has for the club, and that was something that really appealed to me when deciding on my next move".

So far, Stockport have had a phenomenal campaign as they see themselves top of League Two after seventeen games, with the likes of Wrexham and Mansfield Town hunting them down. How big of a part has Powell played in this, though?

How has Powell got on at Stockport so far?

Powell hasn't quite had the impact at Stockport that he and the fans were hoping for. In fairness, he has been rather unfortunate with injuries and recently spent six weeks out on the sidelines. Before the injury, he started five of Stockport's first eight league games, featuring mostly in the number ten role.

His first goal for the club came back in September as the 29-year-old's headed effort found the back of the net in a 2-1 win away to MK Dons. Sadly, the game ended abruptly for Powell as he was brought off in the 52nd minute after sustaining an injury. He also grabbed himself an assist earlier in the season as Stockport hosted Crawley.

Powell recently made his comeback from injury, starting in a first-round FA Cup tie with non-league Worksop Town in which Stockport picked up a 5-1 victory. He then made his return to league action a week later as a late substitution against Swindon.

The former Stoke man will be hoping he can kick on now and showcase the qualities that have been on display throughout his intriguing career.
