FLW looks at how Danny Hylton has been getting on after scoring regular goals for Oxford United and Luton Town.

Danny Hylton was a prolific goalscorer who terrorised defenders on his day.

As a youngster, Hylton was a regular for Aldershot Town, and he helped them achieve promotion into the Football League before scoring a number of League Two goals.

He earned a big move to Rotherham United in 2013, but his time there did not go as planned, and he was sent out on loan almost immediately. Just one year after signing for Rotherham, he was transfer listed and eventually picked up by League Two Oxford United; a decision that turned out to be superb for all parties involved.

Over the course of two seasons, Hylton contributed to 40 League Two goals with Oxford United and earned promotion to League One. At the end of the 2015/16 season, the striker turned down a new contract with the club and opted to sign for Luton Town in League Two.

It was at Kenilworth Road where Hylton really upped his game and played the best football of his career by far. In his first two seasons with the club, he was their top scorer on both occasions, scoring a total of 42 league goals over the two seasons.

He was becoming rather accustomed to earning promotions in the EFL as between 2017 and 2019, he played a huge part in Luton's back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

Hylton remained a part of Luton's squad in the second tier, but his goals dried up, and his game time was decreasing as he reached the twilight of his career. He eventually left the club in 2022, but will always be remembered by the Hatters, as well as Oxford, for his once prolific goalscoring form.

When Hylton departed Luton in the summer of 2022, he returned to the division that he was very familiar with: League Two. It was Northampton Town that secured his services on a two-year deal.

The striker was no longer a prolific goalscorer, but he was brought in to do a different job with Northampton, which was essentially to come on as a substitute and see out games.

He did this to perfection and decided that four career promotions were not enough, as he added a fifth with the Cobblers, helping them reach League One in 2023.

Hylton suffered a lot with injuries over the last couple of years, and as a result, he barely featured for Northampton last season. He made four substitute appearances around the festive period, but that was the last time Hylton played professionally.

What is Hylton up to now?

The striker was released by Northampton at the end of last season, and he remains without a club. Hylton is now 35 years old, but is yet to retire, so perhaps there is still one more season left in his legs.

Over the summer, the forward spent time on trial with Charlton Athletic during their pre-season campaign to help him regain fitness and perhaps mentor the younger members of the squad. Charlton boss, Nathan Jones, previously managed Hylton at Luton Town, and this summer described him as possibly his best ever signing.

Hylton managed to grab himself a goal during pre-season, and it has recently been revealed that Jones is keen on bringing the striker into the squad.

Hylton has since joined Charlton Athletic as a player-coach on a short term deal.

Addicks boss Nathan Jones spoke to Charlton's official website about the recent news: “Danny is someone I know very, very well who is a true professional. He will be an important member of our squad and coaching team. He will push and educate our players and he will live and breathe the club. When needed, he will be someone we can rely on for something different on the pitch.

“He has been with us since the summer and this role is the start of his coaching journey, and I have no doubt he will continue to have a positive impact on our group.”
