Antoine Semenyo and Andi Weimann are the two current Bristol City players that will be representing the Championship club at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but there will be a number of ex-Robins out there as well.

Among them will be one of Knowle’s most famous former residents, Famara Diedhiou.

The striker, who scored 51 goals in 169 appearances for City before his departure in the summer of 2021, has been named in the Senegal squad for the tournament, which gets underway tomorrow.

Alou Cisse’s side had been tipped as dark horses by many but will be without their talisman as Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane has been ruled out due to injury.

That will mean the other attackers in the Senegal squad, including Diedhiou, have to step up if the Lions of Teranga are to follow up their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations triumph by going deep in the World Cup.

Senegal are in Group A alongside Netherlands, Qatar, and Ecuador so will feel they’ve got an excellent chance of making it to the knockout stages, where they could well be England’s opponents in the round of 16.

Diedhiou arrives at the tournament lacking in form after missing the start of the 2022/23 Turkish Super Lig campaign due to injury.

He signed for Alanyaspor when he left Ashton Gate last summer and was their joint-top scorer in his debut season, finding the net 13 times in 29 appearances, but has yet to score this term.

In fact, the 29-year-old has only played 112 minutes of club football ahead of the World Cup – with his only start coming in the Turkish domestic cup.

It remains to be seen what part Diedhiou will play, if any, in Senegal’s Group A opener against Netherlands on Monday but with Mane out, there may be an opportunity for him to step up and make his mark.
