Newcastle United confirmed last month that the club had reached an agreement with Bruno Guimarães to extend the Brazilian’s contract until 2028. Arriving from Olympique Lyon in January 2022 for €42.10 million, the 25-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders which led to interest from Barcelona in the summer.
“He’s such an important player and he’s done so well since he joined the club,” said Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the club’s website. “He’s been a huge success since he’s been here so I just hope that he can continue in that vein and carry on his success with us.” A fan-favourite at St. James Park, Guimarães added: “I’m so happy here. It’s a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well.”
The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) acquired Newcastle United in late 2021 and according to Transfermarkt, spent €101.10m in their first transfer window (January 2022). Chris Wood (€30m), Dan Burn (€15m) and Kieran Trippier (€14m) arrived for a combined €59m but it would be the arrival of Guimarães for €42.10m that would break Newcastle United’s previous transfer record, before the Magpies surpassed it in the summer of 2022 to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for €70m.
Guimarães has since played 71 games across all competitions under Howe, scoring 11 and creating eight, while helping his side qualify for the Champions League. Establishing himself as one of Europe’s best sixes following the arrival of Sandro Tonali at St. James Park, Guimarães has seen his market value increase by €15m to €85m in Transfermarkt’s latest update, which makes the Brazil international Newcastle United’s most valuable player.
It’s clear as to why clubs of Barcelona’s quality are showing an interest in signing Guimarães. The defensive-midfielder is arguably Howe’s first name on the team sheet and his consistent performances at a high-level showcase just how settled Guimarães is at the club. It’s early stages but the player’s partnership with Tonali is blossoming, and Newcastle United’s midfield should be set for the coming seasons- however, NUFC must now deal with the 10 month suspension of Tonali and will need to find a stop-gap until his return. Guimarães excels at playing passes from a deeper position and showcases an excellent ability to read the game.
