Matt Richie added his name to the pantheon of superb missed efforts during Newcastle’s win over Burnley last night.
And in honour of the Magpies man, we’ve decided to look back on some of the very worst (or best?) misses in footballing history.
Brace yourselves.
Type the name ‘Ronny Rosenthal’ into Google and the very first hit is this legendary miss against Aston Villa.
He may have won titles in England, Belgium and his native Israel, but the former Liverpool striker will forever be remembered for skying it over in front of the Holt End.
Not a name many people will know, Rocky Baptiste was a legend of non-league football and usually scored goals for fun.
Against Waltham Abbey in 2008 however, he didn’t quite have his shooting boots on…for the first half anyway.
Perhaps, still, the greatest miss in Premier League history.
Hat-tricks for Arsenal and a Champions League with Ajax – this is still the first thing that springs to mind when Kanu’s name is mentioned.
It’s a cruel game.
The dictionary definition of ‘it was easier to score’.
We couldn’t go through a history of the worst misses in football without mentioning this brilliant effort from Diana Ross in the opening ceremony of World Cup ’94.
Hopefully she’ll be back to try again in 2026.
A glaring miss is bad. Doing it for Rangers in the Old Firm Derby is much, much worse.
You have the chance to win a game for your country … and you do this. Can there be a worse feeling in football?
