So far, the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup does not have a venue after Japan withdrew from hosting the competition after several problems with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of course, the city of Tokyo did not want to host the Olympics but pressure from the International Olympic Committee and contractual agreements forced Japan into keeping the quadrennial competition in Japan.

Flamengo are currently in the semi-finals of the competition and are desperate to return to the Club World Cup after coming up just short in the 2019 final against Liverpool.

Even though the Rubro-Negro are close to going back, it has been revealed that they may not have to win South America’s premier competition in order to feature.

That’s because the city of Rio de Janeiro are pushing to host the competition. If they were to do so, the champion of the Brasileirão (as is the case with the host country) would be allocated a spot in the Club World Cup.

Of course, this is far from a certainty as Flamengo are currently in third place, eight points behind leaders Atlético Mineiro, though Flamengo have two games in hand on the competition.

In addition, leaders Atlético Mineiro and second-place side Palmeiras are both still in the Copa Libertadores so it’s very possible that a Brasileirão-Libertadores double could occur, which would result in Brazil’s second-place team going through to the Club World Cup.

However, this is all simply a theory for now. Regardless, should Rio host the CWC, there’s a giant chance that the competition would feature two Brazilian representatives.
