How emerging midfield trio are finally gelling with Enzo dropping deeper | OneFootball

The international break makes for a chance for some football writers to really let their hair down and write some longer, more details pieces, and we particularly enjoyed the Athletic’s long read on Chelsea’s midfield, released today.

It goes into detail on how the Moises Caicedo – Conor Gallagher – Enzo Fernandez trio is starting to come together, featuring lots of nice diagrams and illustrations showing their successes against Fulham and Burnley in recent weeks.

What we would add to what they’ve written is that a key part of this was the addition of Cole Palmer to the attacking line. This freed up Enzo to play deeper again, and as the screenshots in the piece show, that enable Chelsea to have a spare man with great passing ability and technique on the turn receiving balls from the goalkeeper and defenders.

Caicedo and Fernandez either side of him give him options and protection and when Chelsea lose it, while Enzo works his magic from the middle. It’s all coming together just as planned.
