Preston North End will go into the final three months of the Championship season knowing that they are well-and-truly in the mix for the play-off spots – as are a lot of clubs.

The Lilywhites’ season so far has been a tale of two stories when it comes to playing at Deepdale and then on the road, with their home results being some of the worst in the second tier over the course of the campaign.

Despite more season tickets sold than any other recent year, North End have struggled to win on home soil, with just three victories from their 14 league matches in PR1 and just 13 points picked up out of a possible 42.

That is a complete contrast to their results on the road, having won eight times in 14 attempts with 27 points out of a possible 42, cementing Ryan Lowe’s side as one of the best away teams in the whole division.

We know that PNE haven’t been their best at Deepdale in 2022-23, but how do their attendances compare to bitter rivals Blackpool though? Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Last season, North End averaged just 500 more fans in the stadium than the Tangerines over the course of the campaign, with Blackpool riding the crest of a wave following their promotion the previous year.

Things have changed though in 2022-23 – cheaper season tickets for Lilywhites fans have seen their numbers skyrocket, with their current average home attendance for the season after 14 matches being 15,766.

That is over 3,000 higher than their total average for the previous campaign, which was 12,608, but their wretched form at home risks turning supporters away for the 2023-24 season.

Unlike PNE though, Blackpool’s attendances haven’t increased, with last year’s figure of 12,104 being bettered right now with an average of 12,171 after 13 matches played.

The Seasiders are restricted though by their East Stand, which is used to house away fans and it is never filled up to capacity, and in some cases it is split, just like against North End back in October which limited the amount of fans that the club could get through the door.

That was not Blackpool’s biggest attendance of the campaign though, with 13,652 being welcomed at Bloomfield Road, which was less than Sheffield United’s visit to the Fylde coast which was watched by 14,395.

As for North End, their biggest attendance of the season came when Burnley made their first competitive visit to Deepdale since 2011, in which 20,212 were inside the stadium for – bolstered by a sell-out away end.

In terms of the Championship as a whole, North End are 15th in the average attendance standings, whilst Blackpool sit in 21st spot, with only Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United and Luton Town below.
