Tanguy Ndombèlé was officially confirmed as a Tottenham player on Tuesday with the north London club smashing their transfer record to land the highly-rated Lyon star.
But his future could have been oh so different, according to one story in L’Equipe.
They say that Manchester United were in for the 22-year-old and made firm enquiries to the Ligue 1 side as to his availability this summer.
Lyon were willing to negotiate with United, who apparently would have paid €70m for the France international.
But the club asked for more time from Lyon while they sorted out Paul Pogba’s future.
Pogba has admitted that he wants a “new challenge” and has been linked with a switch to both Juventus and Real Madrid.
United had highlighted Ndombèlé as the perfect replacement for Pogba, and even when the youngster was in London ready to complete his medical, had not fully made up his mind whether to join Spurs.
As it was, United told the player and Lyon that they needed a few more weeks to see what was going to happen with Pogba, and as such, Ndombèlé joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side instead.
