The Daily Mail are reporting that Ipswich are closing in on Omari Hutchinson, the Chelsea winger who spent last season with the Tractor Boys on loan.

The 20 year old played an important role on the run to automatic promotion made by Kieran McKenna and his team, and they then made him their priority signing as they look to strengthen and prepare for Premier League football.

Now the Mail report on “growing hope” that a deal to sign Hutchinson can be “successfully concluded.” Hutchinson is “open to moving,” and Chelsea are happy to cash in on a prospect who doesn’t currently look likely to get much first team action were he to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The report says that the price could be £22m, all of which would be PSR “pure profit” as he signed on a free transfer. That sort of cash injection could really lubricate the wheels of Chelsea’s summer, which have yet to start really turning.

A good piece of business

Some fans would certainly love to see Hutchinson get a chance in the first team, but that’s never looked likely, even from the day he signed.

He was a smart pickup from the Arsenal academy on a free, his loan was handled well and now the club look set to make a major profit. It’s a pretty cold, soulless business, but that’s what the game is nowadays, and everyone’s done their job in turning an opportunistic pickup into a big profit.

There was previously interest from German side Stuttgart reported – we’ve not heard much about that since, but given they would offer European football, it will be interesting to see if they respond to this Ipswich offer with one of their own. We could yet end up with more than £22m…
