Last week, former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger made a huge claim when he publicly aired his suspicion that Bayern Munich had meddled in Serge Gnabry’s 2016 move to Werder Bremen.
And according to a report from Sport Bild, it seems Wenger may have been onto something.
When Gnabry bagged a brace for Germany against Fiji at the 2016 Olympic Games, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is said to have been so impressed by what he saw that he immediately called the club’s technical director Michael Reschke and told him to sign him.
But it seems Bayern knew Arsenal would demand a hefty from a club of their calibre, so they stepped aside and allowed Gnabry to join Werder Bremen in a deal worth €5m.
One year later, Bayern swooped for the forward before immediately loaning him out to Hoffenheim.
“This way Werder got their dream player for one year and in 2017 they received €1m [net] for the transfer to Munich,” report Sport Bild.
“The money, in turn, was immediately collected by Bayern as a loan fee from Hoffenheim, because Gnabry was loaned out there for a season.”
Very smart indeed.
Gnabry spent a season on loan at Hoffenheim before returning the Bayern in the summer of 2018 and the age of 24, he is now blossoming into a fine player.
What could have been eh Arsène?
