Sunderland beat Wigan 2-0 at the DW Stadium yesterday to confirm their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup but Niall Huggins’ injury late on has proved cause for concern among the Black Cats fanbase.
The young defender impressed against the Latics and set up Luke O’Nien’s goal, which put the North East club 2-0 up, but was forced off due to an injury in the 79th minute.
Before his early exit, the 20-year-old, who signed from Leeds United in the summer, turned heads with his performance at right-back.
Making just his second appearance in a Sunderland shirt, Huggins won four of his five duels on the ground and his only aerial duel as well as making an interception and a tackle (Sofascore).
The defender was also heavily involved for his side going forward, having 52 touches, playing two key passes, and providing the assist for the second goal (Sofascore).

His performance and early exit proved a talking point among many fans on Twitter…
