Last summer saw Manchester United fail in their very public pursuit of former Manchester City man Sancho, though they refused to meet Dortmund’s £107 million asking price, while the Red Devils are also one of a number of sides being rumoured for a move for Haaland this summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer havin worked with his compatriot during their time at Molde.

The Norwegian reportedly has a £68m release clause in his current contract that will come into effect in 2022, although there are suggestions that he could be moved on at the end of the season in order to generate a larger transfer fee.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been liked with Haaland following his incredible goalscoring exploits as they look to pep up their respective attacks.

While Dortmund would no doubt wish to keep hold of their prized assets, recent struggles both on and off the pitch may have changed the situation.

A poor run of from in the first half of the season saw Lucien Favre sacked, with current Borussia Monchengladbach boss Marco Rose set to take over next term, while the ramifications of Covid-19 have left the club struggling financially.

According to Dortmund CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, they may well be forced to sell their star men, in order to ensure that the club remains ‘economically stable’.

“In the midst of a pandemic, I am now ruling nothing out,” Watzke told Handelsblatt.

“But it is not necessarily the aim. The most important thing is the financial balance: that we have a strong team on the field and at the same time are economically stable.

“If we play the whole of next season without spectators, we must certainly think about giving up a player. For the hell out of it, asking banks for credit lines just to not sell a player is not going to be our way.

“We are still unable to make a forecast for the year as a whole. As long as the situation persists, we will not be in the black. Our liabilities are currently at 26.7 million euros. This shows that BVB has great economic strength and is very stable.”
