There were four Premier League games today with the top of the table clash between Liverpool and Manchester City topping the bill.

Liverpool and Manchester City could not be separated at Anfield as their 1-1 draw left the Premier League title race on a knife edge.

The last ever Premier League encounter between Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola was just one of the narratives coming into this blockbuster Anfield encounter.

It was Guardiola’s side who started the stronger, dominating the early possession and threatening through Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.

Luis Díaz had the ball in the net in the 18th minute but Darwin Núñez was offside in the buildup, as Liverpool stepped things up in front of a raucous Anfield crowd.

City got the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. De Bruyne put a corner towards the near post, Nathan Ake blocked Alexis Mac Allister and John Stones tapped home. A brilliant set piece routine.

Dominik Szoboszlai had a great opportunity to level the scores but he mistimed his header from Harvey Elliott’s inviting cross.

Erling Haaland had his first sighting of goal shortly before the 40 minute mark, running at Virgil van Dijk but failing to truly threaten Caoimhín Kelleher.

Both sides had chances before the half-time whistle – Díaz firing wide from just outside the box for Liverpool, Walker flashing a cross past any runners for City.

Less than two minutes into the second half, City gifted Liverpool a penalty. Ake’s pass to Ederson was too short but the Brazilian still decided to recklessly dive into Núñez and take him down for both a spot kick and a yellow card. He was also injured in the process and was substituted shortly after.

With Mohamed Salah on the bench until the hour, Alexis Mac Allister stepped up and slotted home to bring the Reds level.

City looked rattled after the goal but still created openings, the best coming to Foden, who was denied by some smart keeping from Kelleher.

Díaz missed a series of massive chances to put Liverpool into the lead but his touch and/or his shooting was wayward.

City substitute keeper Stefan Ortega doing very well to prevent Núñez from tapping home just before the 70 minute mark as both sides pushed for the winner.

Jérémy Doku thought he had the winner but his left-footed shot cannoned off the inside of the post and into the grateful arms of Kelleher.

The Belgian winger then got very lucky to not give away another penalty in the ninth minute of added time.

The draw leaves just one point between the top three and keeps Arsenal at the summit.

Share of the spoils

Scorers: Paqueta 48′ Ings 90+1′; Fofana 11′, Mavropanos (OG) 45′

Danny Ings came off the bench and rescued a point for West Ham as they drew 2-2 with Burnley.

Fresh off the back of their Europa League heartbreak on Thursday, West Ham were looking to get more luck domestically as they welcomed Burnley to east London.

But it was the visitors who took the lead after only 11 minutes as David Datro Fofana stunned the home crowd with a brilliant goal from 25 yards.

Vincent Kompany’s side then doubled their advantage right before the break as Konstantinos Mavropanos turned the ball into his own goal.

Into the second half and almost immediately the Hammers pulled one back as Lucas Paqueta burst through the Burnley defence and slotted home.

The woodwork came to the Clarets rescue late on as cross from the right took a deflection, looped over James Trafford but crashed back off the bar.

David Moyes’ side thought they got their equaliser late on but Danny Ings’ strike was ruled out for offside.

Ings though, did get on the scoresheet in added time with this finish being allowed to stand.

Seagulls sink Forest

Scorers: Omobamidele (OG) 28′

Brighton held on for a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest to go above Wolves and into eighth place in the Premier League.

After their 3-2 win at the City Ground in November, Brighton were hoping to do the top-flight league double of Nottingham Forest for the first time since 1979/80.

And it was the home side who were enjoying most of the ball in the early exchanges as Sels was forced into a good save after Moder’s header inside the area.

The Seagulls then got their goal on the half hour mark as Pascal Gross’ cross was headed into his own net by Andrew Omobamidele.

After the break it was Divock Origi who had the best chance to equalise for Forest but the Belgian striker fired over from a tight angle.

Brighton were a little lucky to still have 11 men on the pitch late on as Moder’s lunge found the ankles of Neco Williams – the referee though, deemed the challenge to only be yellow card-worthy.

Spurs lay down a marker

Scorers: Maddison 50′, Johnson 53′, Son 90′, Werner 90+4′

A stunning second half performance from Tottenham saw them score all four goals in a drubbing of Champions League rivals Aston Villa.

Pedro Porro returned to the Spurs starting XI as the north London side travelled to Villa Park looking to rein in Unai Emery’s side as the race for fourth place entered its final stages.

It was a breakneck opening first few minutes with Ollie Watkins going through on goal but falling to Micky van de Ven’s recovery pace.

Meanwhile up the other end James Maddison couldn’t quite get on the end of an inviting cross from Dejan Kulusevski.

Into the second half and within 90 seconds we already had as many efforts on goal as the first half as Leon Bailey burst through and fired over.

Spurs though, went down the other end immediately and scored the opener as James Maddison arrived late in the area and dispatched first time.

The visitors then grabbed their second just three minutes later as Brennan Johnson fired into the roof of the net after a mistake in the Villa backline.

It got worse for Villa on the hour mark as John McGinn was given a straight red card for a dire challenge on Destiny Udogie.

Spurs rounded off a brilliant afternoon on 90 minutes as Son crashed in a first time effort to net their third before Werner came off the bench to get in on the act with a fourth.

Monday sees the Premier League matchweek end with Chelsea’s intriguing clash with Newcastle.
